Fibromyalgia affects almost all aspects in our life. It affects our relationships and how we perform our duties and responsibilities in life. It also greatly affects the decision that we make in our daily lives. Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder that makes us feel tired easily. It also causes pain and stiffness in our muscles, tendons, and joints. We know that we have fibromylagia if after waking up from a deep slumber; we are still feeling tired and depressed.
Fibromyalgia is one of the most common muscular disorders experienced by man. Almost all of us have experienced some episodes of fibromyalgia once in our lives. Although it does not affect our internal organs and is not considered as an emergency case, fibromyalgia still needs medical attention for two major reasons. If left untreated, it can lead to tissue inflammation, joint deformity, and worse possible damage to the internal organs.
This is the reason why many health experts all around the world are investing on several studies that would investigate on the cause and the most effective treatment plan for fibromyalgia. The effort of many medical professionals all around the world to address the problem on fibromyalgia could be reflected on the bulk of fibromyalgia breakthroughs available in the market today. These breakthroughs are discovered with the patient’s comfort and convenience in mind.
In 2007, one of the leading drug manufacturers in the world was able to develop pregabalin, a drug that can lessen muscle pain and fatigue among fibromyalgia patients. Aside from taking in pain medications, antidepressants, muscle relaxants, and sleep aids to lessen the discomfort coming from fibromyalgia, pregabalin is the drug that they need to curb the pain and eventually make fibromyalgia disappear by treating partial seizures, pain following rash, shingles, and diabetes nerve damage. It is also tried and tested to improve our daily function. However, a warning comes with the approval of Food and Drugs Administration. They warned patients that taking pregabalin may induce mild to moderate dizziness and sleepiness.
Aside from drugs, several scientific breakthroughs on fibromyalgia also found that a healthy lifestyle could help treat this medical condition. In 2007, researchers from Harvard Medical School found that exercise is one of the most effective way to prevent and treat fibromyalgia. This breakthrough on fibromyalgia found that women who experience chronic pain but exercised moderately for four months reportedly felt better in more ways than one. Exercise need not to be complicated to become effective. Simple walking and flexibility training can do the trick!
The 135 women who participated in the said study were enrolled in an exercise program that includes strength training, aerobic activity, and flexibility training. They are also provided with a self-help course on managing fibromyalgia. At the end of the study, the participants show significant improvement in their health and pain management.
But one of the most prominent breakthroughs in the treatment of fibromyalgia was in 2010. A group of researchers found that the ancient practice of the Chinese called Tai Chi is a very effective therapy for fibromyalgia patients. Published in the New England Journal of Medicine, this fibromyalgia breakthrough was discovered through a clinical trial conducted on the fibromyalgia patients in Tufts Medical Center for 12 weeks. The researcher confirmed that patients who underwent tai chi therapy was able to lessen their pain, fatigue, sleeplessness, and depression more than patients who were not under a tai chi program. Furthermore, this breakthrough in fibromyalgia also noted that tai chi patients were able to sustain improvement months later.
Indeed, fibromyalgia may not be an emergency situation but the pain that it brings is hardly unbearable. It also affects our day to day activities and our relationship to other people. Whether we like it or not, fibromyalgia is slowly taking over our life and we have to do something about it. This moves many medical practitioners all around the world to venture and develop fibromyalgia breakthroughs through the various treatment plans that can be done to lessen the pain of a fibromyalgia patient.
